Overview of the role
The management Well’s Data Platform is a key enabler to effective decision making within the business. The DBA role is key to this, helping to exploit the data we have to improve complex data journeys. Ongoing management, development, and optimisation of our data estate. You'll be part of the transformation of our enterprise SQL data platform, implementing solutions, as required.
Main Responsibility
- Capacity planning – Work with the development team to analyse the need of storage and backup space in production servers based on usage
- Support software installation and maintenance – Initial installation and configuration of new SQL Servers based on industry best practice, apply patches and upgrade to SQL Servers as required. Manage data transfers to new platforms and setup replications where needed.
- Database Backup and Recovery - create backup and recovery plans and procedures based on industry best practices. Analyse and recommend database services most suited to project requirements.
- Database tuning - As part of on-going maintenance, proactively tune and optimise the database to operate at maximum efficiency. This could be configurations changes, indexing the DB or help the developers tune their queries to improve performance.
- Troubleshooting – support the operations team in resolving issues with DB, work with Infrastructure team to restore data or connectivity issues. Security monitoring – Identify and analyse potential weaknesses and recommend/implement best practices to minimize risks. Analyse logs for possible damage in case of breach.
- Performance monitoring – Monitor DB performance for any issue and make changes in the configurations and provide recommendation for hardware capacity.
- Automation of routine processes using T-SQL, PowerShell and\or other scripting languages.
- Develop solution/proof of concepts to various data requirements. Good understanding of data privacy rules and data regulations.

- Mentor and guide the wider DBA & Master Data teams
Key knowledge and skills required:
- Minimum 5 years of experience working with Microsoft SQL database systems required.
- Experience in migrating databases between different server versions and implementing data retention policies.
- Microsoft SQL DBA experience with HA\DR features like SQL Failover clustering and Always On.
- Experience in Microsoft SQL database architecture, logical and physical design, automation, documentation, installs, shell scripting, T-SQL programming, backup & recovery, monitoring, and database and query tuning.
- Knowledge of database related tech: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Profiler, SQL Server Agent, SSIS & SSRS. Knowledge of other database systems (MYSQL etc.) is a bonus but not essential
- Version control e.g., VSTS/TFS or GitHub.
