Tech Lead/ Lead Developer

Overview of the role

Our Digital Team is growing and a new opportunity has been created to join our team as the Lead Developer.

As the Lead Developer you'll be accountable for all aspects of product engineering in the digital team. You'll ensure efficient code development, adherence to coding standards, and lead on architecture and tech stack decisions, ensuring our products are scalable, maintainable.
As a senior member of the product team, they will play a key role in aligning development work to our strategic objectives. They will be the technical voice in the room as we develop product strategy, fostering a collaborative culture and driving technical innovation.

Main Responsibility

What you'll do:

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to understand needs, goals, and constraints, and effectively translate them into actionable technical requirements for the development team.
  • Plan and document technical specifications for features or system design, ensuring a clear roadmap for development and implementation to ensure alignment of the technical roadmap with business objectives and timelines.
  • Design, build, and configure scalable and maintainable applications to meet business process and application requirements, leveraging technical expertise and problem-solving skills.
  • Direct and oversee the development team in all aspects of the software development life cycle (SDLC), including design, development, coding, testing, and debugging, to deliver high-quality, robust solutions.
  • Write testable, scalable, and efficient code, leading by example, and establishing and maintaining coding standards and best practices for the team.
  • Facilitate peer code reviews, providing constructive feedback to ensure adherence to best practices, coding standards, and the highest possible quality of development output.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members, helping them understand their work in the context of our products, customers, and business, fostering their professional growth, and encouraging the adoption of industry best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Ensure that software quality standards are met by developing, implementing, and enforcing code standards, conducting rigorous testing, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement through feedback loops and process enhancements.
  • Proactively identify technical debt and advocate for necessary refactoring or re-engineering efforts to maintain codebase health and scalability
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices, and evaluate their potential impact on the team's projects and processes
  • Facilitate effective communication within the team and across departments to ensure alignment and collaboration
  • Identify the most efficient and resilient technical solutions to meet complex requirements within an already complex tech stack
  • Lead by example to ensure your team is engaged with our products and customers and that product strategy and customer experiences are considered in everything they deliver
  • Innovative, able to harness the opportunities presented by new and emerging technologies
  • Take a pragmatic approach – know when and how to deliver a true MVP and when to advocate for comprehensive and future-proofed solution

The Ideal Candidate

The knowledge skills and experience you'll need:

  • Full-stack developer with extensive hands-on coding experience and a proven track record as a technical team leader.
  • Experience working with a diverse set of languages and platforms, ideally including Golang, Python, JavaScript, React, and Node.js. Adaptable and quick to learn new languages, frameworks, and platforms.
  • Extensive AWS experience, encompassing core services, security and compliance, database design and management (RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora), architecture, monitoring, and optimization.
  • Experience in working within and shaping DevOps models.
  • Experience or strong interest in working within a Product team, shaping product strategy, and aligning your team’s outputs with long-term business objectives.
  • Ability to lead and mentor effectively within an agile, collaborative environment.
  • Outstanding communication skills – capable of translating business requirements into actionable technical requirements and clearly articulating options, challenges, risks, and implications of development approaches to non-technical stakeholders.Well are proud to be a diverse and inclusive employer.
